Check Out The SSA 27 Community Events Grant Programs Happening This Month!
Lakeview Special Service Area (SSA) 27 offers its Community Events & Placemaking Grant Program, which provides up to $5,000 in financial assistance and technical support for unique events and projects taking place in the Lakeview neighborhood. With funding from SSA 27, the program furthers SSA 27’s goals to create memorable experiences and promote the neighborhood within the boundaries of the SSA.
Here are the events taking place in the month of August!
On Saturday, August 14 from 12pm - 5pm at the Lakeview Low-Line Southport CTA Station, check out this pop-up used book sale raising funds for Turning the Page, a non-profit which works with North Lawndale elementary schools to help students receive valuable educational resources and a high-quality public education.
On Saturday, August 14 from 6pm - 7pm at St. Alphonsus Church, take in a performance from the CircEsteem Around Chicago’s summer tour! Enjoy a 45-minute circus show performed by youth ages 10-19 with assistance by adult coaches followed by a 30-minute workshop for youth in attendance to try the circus skills themselves.
On Saturday, August 14 from 1pm - 3pm at Athenaeum Theatre’s Brick Patio, check out the Step Sessions Jazz Concert Series. Organized by jazz guitarist, Lee Rothenberg, a professional musician who has performed at the Green Mill, Jazz Showcase, and The Chicago Jazz Festival. Lee and his friends are brining the great music from their Step Sessions developed in COVID-19 to the commercial corridors in Lakeview. These concerts will feature guest stars, including some of the most talented jazz musicians in the city. They are kid-friendly with a special pre-show performance for youngsters on select show dates.
On Saturday, August 21 from 1pm - 5pm on Southport Ave from Byron to Roscoe, visit Paint Southport. Come for the day and see 25 local artists paint and draw the scenery along Southport Avenue in Chicago’s only timed plein air competition. Event visitors will watch the art come alive before their eyes as artists compete to win one of three juried prizes. Spectators can also take part by voting for their favorite to win the “People’s Choice” award. Finished paintings will be available for sale after the event. Organized by Spectra Fine Art.
On August 28 & 29 along the Southport Corridor, enjoy this Harry Potter-themed weekend event which includes a scavenger hunt at businesses along the Southport Corridor, specialty pop-up shop and photo booth setup at Lakeview Low-Line Southport Station. Organized by Covenant Youth Collision.
