Business Spotlight - The Sill

Meet Brittney Ross, Shop Manager at The Sill located in the Southport Corridor who were recently listed as one of the top 10 plant shops in Time Out Chicago! Read our interview with Brittney to learn what she loves most about running the store and some of her favorite nearby businesses.

Give us a small backstory of how your business started.

Our founder and CEO, Eliza Blank launched The Sill in 2012 with the simple premise: plants make people happy. Passionate about plants, thanks to her mother and grandmother, she wanted to help demystify them and make them more accessible in her current home of New York City. She built the brand from the ground up out of her brother’s office, delivering orders by hand on the weekends. Since then, our offerings have expanded beyond plants to include other elements of biophilic design to help you reconnect with nature and cultivate a life well-lived.

What are some of your favorite moments of running your business?

Connecting people with nature and building relationships with new and seasoned plants parents in Chicago.

What is one thing that many people may not know about you or your business?

This is the first location in the Midwest! We offer local delivery, potting services, and host events in our space. Workshops and plant swaps are coming very soon.

Do you have any hobbies that you do outside of running your business?

Tending to my own plants at home, I love exploring the city on my bike, camping in National Parks, and playing billiards.

What are some businesses you love in Lakeview or Roscoe Village?

Music Box Theatre and Schubas for entertainment, Real Good Juice and Dark Matter for a pick me up, Cafe Tola and Coalfire Pizza for a bite to eat.

What are the best ways people can support your business right now?

Stop by the store to shop, follow us on social media, and tell all of your friends!
